Oxford: Ilford F.P.4 Glass Plates – part 1

Sunday, September 15th, 2024

Here are some portraits I recently made on Ilford F.P.4. dry glass plates which expired circa 1950. The box doesn’t have a visible expiry date that I can find but the label design (see below) was dated by Nicholas Middleton who has done some research about it. His excellent photo blog contains a wealth of information about various old film stocks, cameras and glass plates he has tested. Following his advice I rated these glass plates at ISO 5 which gave me an exposure time of approximately 2 seconds in shade. The Ross reflex camera I used has been serviced and inside is a date of manufacture from 1915 written in pencil. The camera is in excellent condition considering it’s over 109 years old. I still have two more plates to develop and six left to use.

[Tech info:] Ross reflex, Zeiss 11.5 inch f6.3 lens, Ilford F.P.4. glass plates @ ISO 5, developed in Rodinal 1+100 for 1 hour semi-stand (slow agitations at 30 mins).

Oxford: Endeavour 7, FILM 1 – part 8

Monday, June 1st, 2020

Day one of filming Endeavour series 7 in Oxford started in New College Lane. It was a busy morning with quite a bit of coverage to film and there was a stunt involving a cyclist. It was fascinating to see the amount of planning involved for a few seconds of action on screen. One of the first scenes to be filmed didn’t make the final cut.

[Tech info]: Leica M6, 35/2.8 Zeiss Biogon, Kodak Portra 400 (could possibly be Superia 200), Noritsu scans.

Oxford: Endeavour 7, FILM 1 – part 6

These behind the scenes pictures are from the first day of filming in Oxford for Endeavour 7. After spending the morning filming on New College Lane the rest of the day was spent filming a garden party complete with string quartet which sounded amazing.

Oxford: Endeavour 7, FILM 1 – part 5

Tuesday, February 4th, 2020

Here are some behind the scenes pictures from the first day of filming in Oxford on Endeavour 7 | FILM 1, August 2019. It was great to see the crew again after nine months. We had a very busy morning on New College Lane but a slightly more relaxed afternoon inside one of the college gardens. Shaun Evans was directing this FILM and his stand-in, Anthony, can be seen in the first shot below. For a change I used my 35mm Zeiss Biogon lens and I really like the colour rendering in these shots especially the ones in the shade on New College Lane. Perhaps I should use it more with colour film.

[Tech info:] Leica M6, 35/2.8 Zeiss Biogon, Fuji Superia 200 film, Noritsu scans.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 6 | FILM 1 – Pylon. This was a scene that didn’t make the final cut where Morse and Bright chat on the steps outside the Castle Gate police station. Filmed in Oxford, August 2018.

Black Country Living Museum – part 1

Saturday, October 14th, 2017

This set of pictures is from my first visit to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley. It’s a great place to visit, especially for photography and as the entrance ticket is valid for return visits for a whole year I’m already looking forward to going back there. For sale in the gift shop was a filming locations map for a tv show called Peaky Blinders which is partly filmed there and although I haven’t watched it I can see how the living museum could easily be transformed into a film set.

[Tech info:] Rolleiflex 2.8F Zeiss Planar, Ilford HP5 @ ISO 800, developed in Kodak HC110 1+31.

Oxford: Endeavour 5, episode 5 – part 1

Sunday, October 8th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography from filming of Endeavour series 5, episode 5 in University Parks, Oxford, September 2017. The weather in the morning started off very overcast and dull which was a shame because the scenes due to be filmed called for nice sunny weather but in a stroke of luck the sun eventually burnt through the clouds to completely transform the location. These shots are from my first roll of the day before the sunshine arrived. As this was a new episode I decided to try something different in terms of lens choice for a change so instead of using my Voigtlander 40/1.4 Nokton lens I opted for my 35/2.8 Zeiss Biogon instead. My reasoning for this was that I wouldn’t be needing the speed of the 40/1.4 because there would be plenty of light and I wanted to more accurately compose in the viewfinder – the M6 displays 50mm frame lines when using a 40mm lens. I’m very pleased with the results and have used the images uncropped apart from one frame.

[Tech info:] Leica M6, Zeiss 35/2.8 Zeiss Biogon, Eastman Double X motion picture film, developed in Kodak D76 stock, Pakon scans.
