Oxford Union: Oliver Stone Q&A

Sunday, March 20th, 2016

Oliver Stone came to the Oxford Union for a Q&A session and I was there to do some photography. The previous two Q&A sessions I had photographed had been in the debating chamber but this one was in a much smaller more intimate space and for the first time I had daylight coming in through windows which made for some nice contrast. After my initial light readings before the start of the session I was only able to visually judge my exposure because as the sun was starting to set it gradually got darker outside and neither of my cameras had light meters in them.

Oxford Union: Mary Berry Q&A

Monday, March 14th, 2016

A couple of pictures from the recent Mary Berry Q&A at the Oxford Union. Apparently the most watched tv show of 2015 was the final of The Great British Bake Off but I must confess that I don’t watch a lot of tv and I’ve never seen the show. This was probably a good thing because going into this event I had zero preconceptions of what Mary Berry would be like and I’m happy to say that I found her very down to earth and also quite funny.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 4 – part 5

Monday, October 26th, 2015

This set of pictures are all from the same roll of film from the previous post. Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 3, film 4 on Merton Street in Oxford. The last handful of frames are from the following day on the steps of the Clarendon building. This is a busy part of town at the best of times and it just so happened that filming took place at the height of rush hour with a minimal crew which didn’t include the usual crowd control staff. I lost count of the amount of times they had to reset and re-shoot.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 4 – part 3

Monday, October 5th, 2015

Continuing on from the previous post, here’s the second set of my selections from the same roll of film that I shot during Endeavour filming on Merton Street back in July. This was quite a big sequence and the road needed to be kept clear which meant I ended up being quite far back from a lot of the action. I prefer to stick with using only a 50mm lens for my documentary style photography hence the wide shots in this set. Whenever possible I zoom with my feet and it saves me fumbling around with changing lenses instead of photographing. Yes, I could be carrying around a 70-200mm zoom but I much prefer the perspective I get with a fast 50mm along with the size and weight benefit. Not looking like a paparazzi is a bonus!

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 4 – part 2

Tuesday, September 29th, 2015

This was going to be a bumper post but I’ve decided to split the selections from this roll across two different posts because of the number of images. Please be aware there may be the odd spoiler in these shots, I can’t say because I don’t know anything about the storyline and I just photographed some of what I saw on the street. What I can tell you is this episode looks like it’s going to be exciting! Lots more images to come from this episode which was a lot of fun to photograph.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 3 – part 4

Wednesday, August 5th, 2015

Here’s the final batch of pictures from the University Parks shoot on Endeavour 3. These shots span two different days but I decided to post them together to keep things organised by location. I’ve become a huge fan of Eastman Double X motion picture film recently which is why I’ve been posting so many shots that have been made with it and there are still lots more to come. Anyone thinking of trying it I suggest you develop it in Kodak D76 1+1 dilution. Previously I was using Kodak Xtol developer which did a nice job but you don’t get the same tonal range that you get with D76.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 3 – part 2

Thursday, July 16th, 2015

Some more behind the scenes photography from the third episode of series three of Endeavour. A house in North Oxford was the first location and then there were scenes by the river in University Parks. The crew did well to keep the production moving in University Parks because it was quite busy there with not only people walking into shot but also punters on the river that had to be held back as well. I really enjoyed the park location and have lots more images to post from there.

Oxford: Magdalen College Ball, 2015 – part 1

Tuesday, July 7th, 2015

The only summer ball I had time to photograph this year was at Magdalen College and here are some images from the evening. Ambient light was quite scarce around the college grounds so I had limited options of where I could photograph after dark. For the first time I decided not to use a flash and I’m glad about my decision because it forced me to make pictures I probably wouldn’t have made otherwise. Trying to decide which cameras to take was difficult but in the end I opted for my Leica M2 because of the ease of focussing with the rangefinder in low light and the quality of the lenses. More images to come in a follow up post.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 3 – part 1

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

Here are some behind the scenes shots from the third episode of Endeavour series three that I made during my lunch break. Fortunately this location was down the road from my office so I didn’t have far to travel. I’ve had some positive feedback about my Endeavour photography which was very nice to hear so I’ve posted larger images than usual here so they can be enjoyed all the more. There are some nice shots coming up from this episode that I made on a different day so lots to look forward to.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 2 – part 1

The Endeavour film crew were back in Oxford a few weeks ago to start work on the second episode of series 3. Here are some behind the scenes shots that I made during filming that took place on Holywell Street.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 1 – part 1

Monday, April 20th, 2015

The first episode of Endeavour 3 is currently being filmed and here are some behind-the-scenes shots from a scene that took place outside Endeavour’s flat in Park Town, Oxford. It was a fairly brief scene with only two members of the main cast present – I won’t go into any more detail or give any spoilers. This is the first bit of filming that I have seen from the new series and it was really nice to see some familiar faces among the crew. The crew consisted of a mix of people that I had previously seen working separately on Lewis and Endeavour so it was nice to see them all working together.

Oxford: Voigtlander Bessa 6×9

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

This set of images were made with what I think is the oldest camera I currently own – a Voigtlander Bessa I 6×9 folder from 1936. It works incredibly well for its age but it is a little quirky (it has separate viewfinder windows for focussing and composing) and it’s not particularly fast to use in a hurry but I do enjoy the size of the frames on the film and it folds down to a very compact size which makes it perfect for carrying around. I’ve only put three rolls through it so far and I think I’ll try a roll with this camera mounted on a tripod to see how much sharper the images become.
