Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 3 – part 1

Monday, January 23rd, 2017

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour, Series 4 Episode 3 in Oxford. This was the first day of filming, a Sunday as I recall. It was an early-ish start and I remember the streets being quite empty and quiet but that didn’t last for long. One of the things I enjoy about putting these Endeavour blog posts together is going through my images and remembering things that happened around 6 months before. I don’t usually rush to develop my Endeavour films because I know I won’t be doing much with the shots until after the episodes have been broadcast so it’s often weeks or months until I see if there’s even anything on the rolls. After I’ve watched an episode I go through the film scans and pick out my selections to blog. That’s when the various scenes I photographed make sense. More to come.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 2 – part 2

Wednesday, January 18th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography from Endeavour series 4 episode 2. This was part of the opening sequence which was filmed in Radcliffe Square. The crew started very early to set this up and the day started off overcast but the clouds burnt off quite quickly as I recall and it became a real scorcher of a day. At the time I think it was the hottest day of the year. As the morning progressed the temperature started to rise and so did the numbers of tourists that flowed into Radcliffe Square. If the buildings weren’t enough to get mobile phones snapping it was the presence of a film crew that certainly did. The security crew did a fantastic job with crowd control as the numbers of onlookers increased.  These shots are all from the same roll of film and you can see the harsh sunlight in some of the later shots.

Gear: Voigtlander 40/1.4 test shots

Monday, December 19th, 2016

After seeing lots of great shots from other photographer’s that use a Voigtlander 40/1.4 lens I decided it was time to try one myself. The weather recently has been very overcast and the light less than inspiring but you don’t have to always have sunny weather to test out gear. So far I am very fond of this little lens – the size and weight being two standout features – and I’m very pleased with these initial results.

The Mummy reboot filming in Oxford – part 2

Thursday, September 22nd, 2016

Behind the scenes pictures from The Mummy (2017) reboot starring Tom Cruise when filming took place in Oxford. The facade of Hertford College was cleverly dressed to look like The Royal Thames Hospital complete with ambulance vehicles parked outside. I had a great chat with the lighting guys and it was from them that I discovered the movie is being shot on Kodak film stock which is always nice to hear.

Ken Fox Troupe – Wall of Death

Monday, August 29th, 2016

During my visit to The Great Dorset Steam Fair I got to experience the Wall of Death for the very first time. This wasn’t any old Wall of Death, it was the Ken Fox Troupe Wall of Death and what made it extra special was seeing it with my old friend Benedict Campbell who made an excellent short film about them (see it here). The show is nothing short of spectacular and I highly recommend it if you get the chance to see it.

The Great Dorset Steam Fair 2016 – part 1

Saturday, August 27th, 2016

Two days ago I visited The Great Dorset Steam Fair for a photography day out with my old friend and fellow photographer Benedict Campbell – we used to work at the same photography studio 25+ years ago and I was one of his assistants. Ben suggested the Steam Fair would be great to photograph because he previously visited it to make his short film about the Wall of Death (watch it here). After setting off at 6am we arrived there nice and early with beautiful morning light and not too many crowds. The weather was kind to us with just the odd passing shower during the afternoon which got rid of the humidity and helped keep the air a little fresher. It was a fantastic day out and I really enjoyed seeing so much passion for massive machines. We photographed all day, stayed until it got dark and brought back lots of pictures to share. Lots more to come.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 1 – part 4

Tuesday, July 19th, 2016

Behind-the-scenes photography during the filming of the first episode of Endeavour series 4 (or to be more precise, Endeavour IV: film 1). These pictures were all made before the masses of tourists turned up. To say that things ended up getting very hectic would be understating it a little.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 1 – part 3

Monday, July 11th, 2016

Lots of activity on Turl Street in Oxford for the first episode of Endeavour series 4. The sky started out overcast in the morning but sunshine was forecast later so deciding on which film stocks to take with me was a little tricky. In the end I decided on ISO 400 for the earlier part of the morning and ISO 125 (FP4) for later. I ended up using my faster film sooner than expected so I decided to push Ilford FP4 to ISO 400 and I must say I like these results a lot.

Oxford Union: Jerry Springer

Thursday, June 30th, 2016

Jerry Springer came to the Oxford Union to talk about US politics and the presidential race. It was a fascinating talk and Jerry is a fount of knowledge on the subject.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 1 – part 2

Saturday, June 11th, 2016

Behind the scenes during filming of the first episode of Endeavour series 4 in Oxford. This set of shots is from the first roll that I shot so there aren’t too many people around other than the cast and crew. You can see street signs being twisted around so they wouldn’t be picked up by the camera and last minute touch ups on some of the supporting actors.

Endeavour IV: film 1

If you use Twitter it’s no secret that filming has begun on the fourth series of Endeavour. Here are some behind-the-scenes shots when they were filming in Oxford recently. This is one of my favourite things to photograph because the combination of clothes and cars look so good. It was very  nice to see the crew again who this time are a mixture of familiar and new faces.

The Mummy reboot filming in Oxford

Tuesday, April 12th, 2016

A Hollywood film crew came to town last week as filming of a new modern day reboot of The Mummy began filming here in Oxford starring Tom Cruise. I’ve never seen so many trucks for one production before. All filming was done at night and security was obviously very tight but I did manage to do some photography during the day of a transformed New College Lane and the front of Hertford College which was made to look like a Hospital. It’s too bad they didn’t ask me to do some behind the scenes photography at night with my film cameras because this movie is being shot on film.

Please excuse the heavy watermarking which is not something I’m a fan of but I am tired of seeing the same images of Tom Cruise in Oxford being reused over and over on the internet with either no credit to the original photographer or credited to someone completely different.
