This set of images is from a lunch hour photo shoot I had with Sarah recently. At this time of year the midday sun is not very flattering for portraits so I have to work extra hard to find pockets of light where the quality is nice. Having a location where there are walls to bounce the light around can help and fortunately I have such a location not too far from my office. I previously posted some Fujiroids from this shoot but the colour of the light at this time of day is not very nice which is why I shot more black & white film.
Sarah was really great to work with and I’m very pleased with how these turned out, especially the large format shots on the bottom row.
[Tech info:] Top two rows: Pentax 6×7, 165mm and 135mm lenses, loaded with Kodak TMAX 400 (expired) film. Bottom row: Speed Graphic 5×4, Ektar 203mm and Dallmeyer 12 inch lenses on Ilford HP5 film. All processed in Kodak HC110 1+31.

For this photo shoot I only had three sheets of 5×4 large format film with me so I tried to use them wisely. The light inside Hertford college chapel was very nice and consistent which is just what I needed to minimise waiting around. I really like the interior of this chapel, especially the carved spindles in the last shot below. I did shoot some medium format film as well, those will follow at a later time.
[Tech info:] Speed Graphic 5×4, Pentac f2.9 lens, Ilford HP5 film developed in Kodak HC110 1+31.

Here are some shots from a photo shoot I had with Chloe around a month ago. It was hard to whittle down my selection because there were so many shots that I liked from this shoot. Chloe is incredibly easy to work with which always makes for a high rate of keepers. I was struggling a little with the harsh late afternoon sunlight but it forced me to make the most of the natural reflectors that were all around us (i.e. the cotswold stone walls). We met outside the Sheldonian Theatre and while I was waiting for Chloe to arrive I noticed a photo shoot going on. The crew had a van full of clothes that was a similar style to those you find at Jack Wills but I’m not sure what brand it was for. They had nice late afternoon light to shoot in so they picked the right day.
[Tech info:] Pentax 6×7, 105mm lens, loaded with Fuji Acros 1o0 and Kodak Tri-X 400, both developed in Kodak HC110 1+31. Anti-clockwise from top right, the first three shots are on Acros 100, the others are on Tri-X.

Here are the rest of the shots I made of some of the guests that were going to St Peter’s College ball. A few of these shots were not of the guests but they they were made during the same session so they were on the same roll of film which is why I decided to post them here. The light was fading quite fast at this point so I was struggling a little but these turned out great. According to Kodak you can rate their Tri-X film at ISO 400 or 800 and still develop it for the same amount of time. This proved to be correct even though I was using expired film.
[Tech info:] Mamiya 645 Pro TL and 80/f1.9 lens, loaded with Kodak Tri-X 400, processed in Kodak HC110 1+31.

These shots are from a roll of medium format film that I shot at the 2013 Keble Ball. This is every frame from the roll. The start of the ball is always tricky for photography because I was racing against the fading light as the sun started to drop behind the college buildings as well as trying to stop people to photograph them amidst the flood of guests that were pouring in. It was helpful that I had photographed at last year’s ball so I knew what to expect.
[Tech info:] Mamiya C330f, 80/2.8 lens, loaded with Kodak Tri-X 400 film which I processed in Kodak HC110 1+31 for 7:30.

The Balliol 750th Anniversary Commemoration Ball is coming up next month and in preparation for that dress hire company Wish Want Wear brought a selection of dresses for students to try on. I went along to do some film photography in Balliol’s gardens and here are the shots I made on Fuji instant pack film (just like Polaroid). I’ll be one of the photographers at the ball next month and I’m really looking forward to it. The very first Oxford college ball I ever photographed at was Balliol’s last year, you can see some of my images here.
[Tech info:] Mamiya RB67, 90/3.5 lens, Fuji FP100-C instant pack film.

Here are the rest of the shots from the first roll of film that I developed from the 2013 Keble ball. I forgot to label which ISO speed I had exposed this roll at on the night so when it came to developing the roll I had to make a guess and unfortunately I was wrong so this roll is underdeveloped. It’s amazing that there are any images on the roll at all. Less on to self, must label rolls when you take them out of the camera!

Last year (2012) I photographed at the Keble ball and the ball committee were so pleased with my photography that they asked me back to photograph at this years’ and of course I said yes. It was nice to see some familiar faces that I had photographed there last year and I in turn got recognised too. Just as I did previously I shot with both film and digital – the digital ones I’ve uploaded to Facebook, the film ones I will post here.
So far I’ve developed one roll from the night and below are the first four frames as a bit of a teaser.
[Tech info:] Mamiya C330f, 80/2.8, Tri-X 400 processed in Kodak HC110 for 7:30.

Regular visitors to this blog will know how much I love Fuji instant pack film and last week I decided to try some out on my lunch hour photo walks around Oxford with a camera that I don’t tend to use very much, my Mamiya Universal. Clockwise from top left: Builders working on the new Bodleian Library on their lunch break, security outside the Sheldonian Theatre (graduation ceremony), the red crane at the new Bodleian Library, graduation ceremony photographers (this one was actually shot on my way home after work), the all female a cappella band In The Pink, a guy taking a break in Radcliffe Square.

Here’s the first set of images that I made last weekend of some of the guests on their way to St Peter’s College ball. It was a bit of a chilly evening and rather overcast so photography became tricky as the light level started to drop quite quickly. A lot of the students decided to wear coats (obviously to keep warm) but it’s not so great for photographs which is why I didn’t stop all that many people. I chose to process this roll in Rodinal for more of an old school look compared to HC110. It does increase the grain a little but I don’t mind that.
I’ll be photographing at Keble College ball on 4th May but as it’s the biggest night of the year for college balls (at least four on the same night) I’ll try to do some more group shots on the street of guests making their way to the ball so keep an eye out for me.
[Tech info:] Mamiya 645 Pro TL, 80/1.9 lens, loaded with Kodak Tri-X 400, processed in Rodinal 1+50.

I was hoping to do some photography at the Exeter College ball last weekend but I didn’t send in my request until I was sure of what the weather was going to be like but by that time they had already signed up someone else to do the photography – the day before. That’s a shame because the weather was a perfect summers evening. I didn’t want it to be a total waste so I decided to go along to do some photography of the guests arriving. I really like how these have turned out and despite the falling light levels in Turl Street, film seems to have a way of soaking it all up. There’s a timeless quality to these that I really like especially the guys dressed in black & white.
[Tech info:] Mamiya 645 Pro TL, 80/1.9 lens, Kodak Tri-X processed in HC110 (1+31). One roll was pushed 1 stop for 10mins.
