Oxford: OFW 2012, Haute Couture show, Ashmolean Museum

Here are the Fujiroids (aka Polaroids) that I shot last night, back stage at the Haute Couture show which was held in the Ashmolean Museum as the finale to Oxford Fashion Week 2012. When I think back at all of the amazing dresses and stunning models that were at the show I can’t help feel a little frustrated that this is all I managed to come away with in terms of instant pack film shots. The schedule was so tight compared to last year there wasn’t enough time allowed for photography – something that surprises me considering the benefit to everyone (designers, models, photographer and OFW). I did my best with the time and limited space I had to work in and came away with a set of images that I am pleased with but it’s the ones that got away that are hard to forget. I shot with a range of cameras, digital, colour and black & white film so there are plenty of more shots to come. Something I love about Fujiroids is that they are unique one of a kind gems. You want limited edition? This is it! The scans here don’t do the original prints justice.

Thanks goes to the back stage crew that helped me and to the models for being patient while I juggled different cameras and lighting. The shot in the bottom right corner is of two of the OFW crew that helped me test my lighting setup.

Oxford: Lunch hour session

It feels so good to be back on the streets of Oxford for my regular lunch hour photo walk. After spending last week in Spain (Madrid and Barcelona) it was nice to feel the familiar positive vibe on the streets in town. The University students are back and it’s impossible not to notice – they’re everywhere. I decided to shoot some Fuji pack film today at lunch time in what was a really good session. The images below are all in the order they were shot in the space of around 20 minutes. The construction workers are working on the new Bodleian library building that’s being renovated on Broad Street. I enjoyed chatting with them, a nice group of guys that seemed to appreciate my passion for using old film cameras.

Oxford: Street portraits

A friend emailed me in the morning to say he’d seen some filming going on in Broad Street that looked interesting – an alien, burlesque dancers and a guy carrying a coffin. How could I resist going into town to check it out. By the time I got there the filming was over and the crew had moved into Trinity College, it was the Lewis tv crew. I decided to have a wander to do some street photography, there were so many people around you could’ve mistaken it for the middle of summer. There was a graduation ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre along with four weddings going on and tons of tourist groups on walking tours. It was a real circus especially when a horse drawn carriage rolled along Broad Street to transport the bride to her wedding. My camera of choice turned heads – I’ve never been photographed by so many different people on the same day! You can see one of the shots of me on the street at the bottom of this post (thanks Brian).

This man is part of the Lewis film crew, a really nice guy that I photographed earlier in the summer when they were set up outside the covered market.

Another person I've photographed a few times. He always looks cool.

Brian is the photographer that made the portrait of me below. We had a nice chat about photography. In the shot I'm holding the print you see above.

Light leak! It's such a shame this got ruined, those gloves were so cute.

This man is not the artist of the picture, it was being drawn by his camera shy friend to camera left. I was surprised to hear that he knew about my photo blog.

Oxford: Pandora’s Box part 2

Here are some more images from the Pandora’s box themed shoot I did a couple of weeks ago. I had previously photographed a few of these students at the Keble college 2012 summer ball, they liked my shots from there so I was asked if I wanted to make some shots of them all dressed up before their party. This was a really fun shoot with a bunch of very creative people. Those wings were made by Josh from scratch and it was quite a sight to see him walking down the road with them strapped on his back. The location we chose to shoot at was a local lake which had the most beautiful summer evening light but unfortunately we didn’t have very long for photography before they all had to leave for their party. Some Polaroids I made during this shoot can be seen here.

I hope to do more photo shoots like this so please get in touch if you’ve got anything interesting planned.

Oxford: Oriel Ball 2012 pre-shoot

Here come the girls! I was asked to photograph some students in their ball gowns before they attended the Oriel 2012 commemoration ball and I have to say it turned out to be a really fun photo shoot. These shots are all on film, I previously posted some Polaroid shots from the same shoot. You can see there’s a huge difference in the colour and clarity of film compared to scanning a print.

While we were photographing in the middle of Oxford’s High Street at Queen’s lane the girls literally stopped the traffic (I later found out from someone who happened to be walking past that the traffic was tailed back to Carfax!). I found it hard to choose between these shots so I decided to post more than usual because you get a sense of how fun this photo shoot was. It’s a shame that Oriel didn’t reply to any of my requests to photograph at the actual ball itself.

Oxford: Ready for the ball

Yesterday evening I had a fun photo shoot with some Oxford University students that were all dressed up to go to the Oriel College commemoration ball. I had photographed one of them before at the opening night of Cabaret at Keble College a while back and it was from those images that I was contacted for this shoot (thanks Gen). It was a bit rushed towards the end as they all had to make their way over to Oriel College but I thoroughly enjoyed it. We used three different locations – a back garden, the grounds in Teddy Hall and the middle of the High Street where they were all literally stopping traffic. All of that fabric fluttering in the strong wind looked amazing. I was half expecting to be told to move along because of health and safety!

I contacted Oriel about photographing at their ball but no one replied to me. Magdalen College also had a commemoration ball happening at the same time but the President of the ball committee turned down my request for photography. Such a shame and a missed opportunity to create some great images as they only happen every three years.

These are all scans from Fujiroids (Polaroid). I also shot some film images which will follow on when I’ve had time to process and scan them.

Behind the scenes
One of my Flickr contacts happened to be walking past while I was photographing on the High Street and he sent me these two behind the scenes shots. We’ve never met in person and this is what he had to say: ‘When I saw a photographer last night in the middle of the road with a medium format camera I knew it just had to be you. I’m surprised the police didn’t move you on, you had traffic tailed back up to Carfax’.

Oxford: Fuji instant pack film

These images are from earlier today. The first two were made during my lunch break, the other two were made near the University boathouses. The summer eights rowing competition is on at the moment so I went over to the boathouses after work to photograph anyone that caught my attention but I’m sorry to say that I didn’t manage to do much photography. The buzz that was there last year seemed to be missing which I found quite disappointing.

[Tech info:] I used a sliding Polaroid back on my Mamiya RB67 to shoot two frames on each sheet of Fuji instant pack film. I really enjoy thinking of two shots that will work together and it’s a shame I can’t shoot a roll of film like this.

Tailors in Little Clarendon Street. These guys are always sharply dressed which makes them very photogenic.

Triumph on St. Giles. I was rushing to make this shot and didn't notice the Polaroid back wasn't pushed all the way to the left. I hope I get to photograph this car again.
