Oxford: Endeavour 6, FILM 4 – part 1

Monday, November 5th, 2018

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 6 | FILM 4 in Oxford, October 2018. Teddy Hall was the location for this scene on a very chilly and overcast morning. Usually I wouldn’t push my film to ISO 1600 under daylight conditions but I wanted to see how HP5 would handle the contrast as well as having the flexibility to have a deeper depth of field than I would usually.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 6, FILM 3 in Oxford. I only managed to catch the last few hours of this day’s filming but in order to avoid spoilers I only have a handful of shots to share from this roll at the moment. As usual, I will post more after broadcast.

Oxford Union: Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart

Friday, November 2nd, 2018

US comedians Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart came to the Oxford Union for a Q&A event and I went along to photograph. The lighting conditions were quite challenging with so much back light but I increased the exposure to lift the shadows and trusted HP5 to handle the contrast – which it did very well. I thoroughly enjoyed the event but as the usual video crew were not there I don’t think the video will show up on the Oxford Union YouTube channel.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 6, FILM 1 in Oxford, August 2018. A lot of work goes into recreating a scene from the 1960’s and that includes dressing SA’s (supporting artists) in vintage outfits, sorting out hair and make-up, accessories/props etc even though many of them will be hardly noticeable on screen.

Some behind the scenes shots from day one of three in Oxford filming Endeavour 6, FILM 1. I’m continuing to use mostly colour film for a change but I did manage to use a couple of b&w rolls as well during the three days of filming. I can’t share very much at the moment to avoid spoilers but more pictures will follow after broadcast.

Oxford: Endeavour 6, FILM 2 – part 3

Saturday, July 21st, 2018

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 6, FILM 2 on New College Lane in Oxford. This was an extremely hot day and the tourists were out in force but you can’t really tell that from these pictures. I’ve picked out a selection of spoiler-free images, more will follow after broadcast.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 6, FILM 2 in North Oxford. No spoilers here. If you’d like to see the difference between Kodak Gold 200 film and Fuji Superia 200 film compare these shots with the previous blog post which was shot on Gold 200. Same lens used for both films.

Oxford: Endeavour 6, FILM 2 – part 1

Thursday, July 19th, 2018

Behind the scenes during filming of FILM 2 of Endeavour series 6 in North Oxford. Mainly crew pictures from this roll, no spoilers! Other pictures will follow after broadcast some time in 2019. For a change I have been using colour film instead of b&w but I may change things up a bit – I’m still undecided about that. On this occasion I dusted off one of my least used lenses – a 50/2.0 Summicron lens which originally came with my M2 but when I tested it with b&w film I found the contrast to be lacking for my taste. It does however produce very nice results on colour film so I decided to use it on this occasion.

Oxford: recent filming

Wednesday, July 18th, 2018

There has been quite a flurry of filming activity on the streets of Oxford recently and I’ve photographed some of it. The scorching temperatures have slowed down the amount of photography I’ve been doing lately but I braved the heat when a certain crew rolled into town to film the next instalments of Oxford’s best loved detective. No spoilers.

[Tech info]: Rolleiflex 2.8F, Fuji 400H (expired), Fuji Frontier scans.

Oxford: Endeavour 5, FILM 5 – part 8

Monday, July 2nd, 2018

Behind the scenes during a day of filming in the grounds of Brasenose College, Oxford for Endeavour series 5, episode 5. Stepping in for Directorial duties for the day was Rob Quinn who directed the previous episode.

[Tech info:] Leica M6, 40/1.4 Voigtlander Nokton, Eastman Double X motion picture film, developed in Kodak D76. Pakon scans.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 3 – part 6

Wednesday, June 20th, 2018

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 4 FILM 3 from August 2016. I thought it might be interesting to dig out some pictures from my archive that I haven’t posted yet – there are a lot of them! The first two shots are from Christchurch meadow from a shot that didn’t make the final edit where the First AD was standing in as a groundsman for an over the shoulder POV shot. Next it was a location move to Headington cemetery and was a race against the setting sun and the fading light level. Looking at these pictures almost two years later is interesting for me as some of the crew came back to work on Endeavour series 5 and others didn’t. Two years on the pictures still hold up for me. Photographic memories. More to come.

[Tech info:] Konica Hexar AF, Fuji Reala 100 (expired), Pakon scans.
