Behind the scenes photography during the filming of series 4 episode 3 in Oxford back in August 2016. Most of this episode takes place in a hospital so I was fortunate to come across this sequence being filmed on Queen’s Lane. Now that I’ve seen the finished episode I know that the screen time for this sequence is not very long but it took a lot of careful planning to work out the shots and camera angles – I can also tell you that the car boot was a very tight squeeze for both supporting actors. I really like how these shots turned out – all from the same roll of Fuji Reala 100 which sadly Fuji have stopped making. It renders colours in open shade very nicely with plenty of shadow detail. It’s one of my favourite films to use but I only bring it out on special occasions because it’s hard to find now.

Here are some pictures I made on my cycle ride into work on a foggy morning in early November, 2016. The film I used expired in 2012 and was from the first batch of film I bought from Poundland when it opened in the Westgate Centre. I had never seen film at £1/roll so I cleared the shelf and when I got to the checkout they all had to be scanned individually, all 43 of them!

I recently bought a batch of expired large format 5×4 sheet film that I’m unfamiliar with so I made some test shots during my lunch break to see what they would look like. The film expired in 2005 and as I have no idea of how it’s been stored since then I decided to rate the film at ISO64 instead of 100. The camera I used is my smallest and most portable 5×4 camera which is a Polaroid 110B that I had converted by Randy at holgamods.com. It’s a thing of beauty and a joy to use.
[Tech info:] Polaroid 110B, Mac 100 UP b&w film (expired 2005), rated at ISO64 and developed in Rodinal 1+25 for 8mins in a Jobo.

Behind the scenes during filming in Radcliffe Square, Oxford of Endeavour series 4 episode 2. This was the first day of filming in Oxford for this episode on what started out as an overcast morning but turned out to be a very hot and sunny day. The tourists were out in force and the crew did an amazing job of crowd control with minimal staff. I must give a shout out to the props and art departments for the attention to detail that went into the table that was laid out with the petition (most of which was never seen on screen). It was so convincing that I saw some tourists trying to sign up! While all of this was going on the set at New College was being prepared for the dance routine that was due to be filmed the following day (last shot). More to come.

Lots of images to share in this post. All from the same roll of film shot at the Town v Gown 2017 boxing event which was held in the debating chamber at the Oxford Union Society. As in previous years I tried to document both the behind-the-scenes goings on as well as some of the actual boxing in the ring which wasn’t easy because of the distance between the two buildings where both of these things were happening. I wanted to travel light so I only took two lenses with me for my Leica M2 – a 40/1.4 and a 50/1.5 but I ended up using the 40/1.4 for the whole evening.

Behind the scenes photography from Endeavour – Series 4 Episode 2 at New College, Oxford. This was at the end of the day which you can tell by the long shadows and harsh sunlight in some of the shots. At the time I had no idea that the main storyline revolved around the band Wildwood so after watching the episode I’m glad I managed to get the group shot with the band’s manager and some of the crew. For most of my Endeavour behind the scenes photography I tend to use b&w film the most overall but on this day I only took colour film because although I had no idea how colourful the song and dance routine was going to be, I did get a little peek at part of the set the day before when a couple of scenes were being filmed in New College so I got to see the final touches of glitter being added to the rainbow and a few of the props such as the coloured watering cans and the step ladders. That was when I felt I had to use colour film.
Funnily enough, the spot where the scene with the screaming Wildwood fans was filmed in New College Lane is the same place where Tom Cruise was filming scenes from The Mummy reboot a few months earlier. You can see some of my pictures of that here.

These behind the scenes shots of Endeavour are from the first day of filming in Oxford for Episode 3 of Series 4. This was the first scene they filmed in the morning of Dr Max DeBryn cycling around Radcliffe Square but it didn’t make the final edit. I’ve cycled over those cobble stones and it’s not comfortable at all.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour, Series 4 Episode 3 in Oxford. This was the first day of filming, a Sunday as I recall. It was an early-ish start and I remember the streets being quite empty and quiet but that didn’t last for long. One of the things I enjoy about putting these Endeavour blog posts together is going through my images and remembering things that happened around 6 months before. I don’t usually rush to develop my Endeavour films because I know I won’t be doing much with the shots until after the episodes have been broadcast so it’s often weeks or months until I see if there’s even anything on the rolls. After I’ve watched an episode I go through the film scans and pick out my selections to blog. That’s when the various scenes I photographed make sense. More to come.

Behind the scenes photography from Endeavour series 4 episode 2. This was part of the opening sequence which was filmed in Radcliffe Square. The crew started very early to set this up and the day started off overcast but the clouds burnt off quite quickly as I recall and it became a real scorcher of a day. At the time I think it was the hottest day of the year. As the morning progressed the temperature started to rise and so did the numbers of tourists that flowed into Radcliffe Square. If the buildings weren’t enough to get mobile phones snapping it was the presence of a film crew that certainly did. The security crew did a fantastic job with crowd control as the numbers of onlookers increased. These shots are all from the same roll of film and you can see the harsh sunlight in some of the later shots.

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of the first episode of Endeavour series 4 which is titled ‘GAME’. This was the morning of the very first day of filming in Oxford for this episode. The episode was broadcast last night (8th January 2017) on ITV and as I write this blog post I realise that I made these pictures 7 months ago. It’s nice to look back through them and remember how the 8am start meant that the streets were quiet to begin with but within a couple of hours it was mayhem as fans and onlookers crowded the pavements. I remember being impressed at how the fairly small film crew managed to clear Turl Street for a long lens shot from the Trinity College gates on Broad Street. Unfortunately I had a mishap in the darkroom while I was rushing to develop my films and two rolls got ruined so I’m unable to share those shots.

Hollywood came to Oxford in the form of Michael Bay and his Transformers 5 film crew to film some scenes for The Last Knight (or was it E75). Security was quite heavy handed but I did my best to document some of the goings on in-between the rain showers. There was a good variety of camera vehicles and they used a drone for some aerial footage of the black Citreon car driving along New College Lane. I’ve got a feeling the scenes filmed in Oxford will probably be set in London in the final edit of the movie.

This is the first part of my coverage of the 2016 Remembrance Sunday event in Oxford. The sky was clear in the morning which made for very contrasty light. Last year I used large format film so this year I decided to change things up a bit and mainly used 35mm. I did also take a 6×9 medium format camera but didn’t use it very much. More images to follow.
