Oxford: Olympus EE-3 half-frame test

Monday, May 7th, 2018

For quite a while I’ve been looking for a cheap half-frame camera to test out and I finally managed to get one when I was least expecting it in a mixed lot of camera bits I picked up at auction. It’s an Olympus EE-3 which is fixed focus and true point and shoot because apart from the manual aperture settings when using flash, there are no other controls that you can change. The selenium cell light meter is dead on my camera but the shutter works so I decided to test it during a lunch break photo walk around Oxford. With 72 frames to get through on a roll of 36 exposure film I was able to be very instinctive with my shots – see something, point, click, move on. There’s no need to carefully consider the composition on every frame because this camera lets you use it almost without thinking, just like when you blink without thinking about it first, you just do it.

Here’s a selection of pictures from the first test roll and it looks like the camera is working well despite the dead light meter. I assume it’s working at sunny 16.

Oxford: Remembrance Sunday, 2016 – part 1

Wednesday, December 28th, 2016

This is the first part of my coverage of the 2016 Remembrance Sunday event in Oxford. The sky was clear in the morning which made for very contrasty light. Last year I used large format film so this year I decided to change things up a bit and mainly used 35mm. I did also take a 6×9 medium format camera but didn’t use it very much. More images to follow.

Oxford: Olympus OM1 test, lunch break photo walk

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016

These shots are from an Olympus OM1 I wanted to test four months ago. I was also testing some expired Ilford Pan F film that I was given inside a bulk film loader but I had no idea how long ago it had expired. Somehow the roll got fogged but I can’t remember how – I need to start making notes.

Gear: Olympus OM1 test

Monday, February 22nd, 2016

A generous friend of mine (thanks Clive) gave me an Olympus OM1 that he had been given over 10 years ago but never got around to using it. I was very pleased to accept it as I’ve been curious about the Olympus OM1 for a long time. I keep hearing so many positive things about it but I don’t have any experience of Olympus SLR cameras having been a lifelong Nikon user. It turned out that the light meter doesn’t work in this OM1 but fortunately it’s a manual mechanical camera and still works fine without the light meter or batteries. These shots are from the first test roll I put through it during my lunch break.
