Sunrise in Bagley Wood, September 2020. I hadn’t used my Pentacon Six for quite a long time up until this point so I decided to take it out for some exercise.

When I heard there was going to be a wrestling match being filmed for Endeavour series 7 I jumped at the chance to do some behind the scenes photography – even if it did mean driving to London at the crack of dawn. The location was a working mens club and as well as the wrestling match there was also the interior of the Jolly Raja Indian restaurant which was a two for one bonus. As a kid I used to watch wrestling on World of Sport on Saturday afternoons so it was quite a treat to be transported back.
Usually I would only post pictures from the same roll of film but this time I’ve combined two rolls – a two for one bonus.

These pictures are from the interior studio set of Castle Gate police station on the final day of filming Endeavour 7 | FILM 3. The second half of the day was spent filming in Bright’s office but as the crew were preparing that part of the set I took the opportunity to document some of the other areas as they had been left from a previous day of filming. The evidence room used to be Thursday’s office in series 6. There isn’t any natural daylight on this set, all of the lighting is courtesy of Vince and his lighting crew.

Day one of filming Endeavour series 7 in Oxford started in New College Lane. It was a busy morning with quite a bit of coverage to film and there was a stunt involving a cyclist. It was fascinating to see the amount of planning involved for a few seconds of action on screen. One of the first scenes to be filmed didn’t make the final cut.

On one of my cycle rides around Oxford city centre for my daily exercise during lockdown I took along my Widelux panoramic camera to document the empty streets that would usually be full of people and traffic. Truth be told, I’ve never enjoyed cycling around Oxford more than I have recently especially with cleaner air to breath and the absence of mobile phone zombies crossing the road in front of you with their eyes glued to their screens. Small benefits of lockdown.

These behind the scenes pictures are from the first day of filming in Oxford for Endeavour 7. After spending the morning filming on New College Lane the rest of the day was spent filming a garden party complete with string quartet which sounded amazing.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 7 | FILM 3 in Merton college, Oxford at the end of October, 2019. These shots are from two different days that the crew spent in Merton College making good use of the lovely grounds and some of the rooms (second unit also filmed a brief scene on Merton Street). Fortunately we had nice weather the whole time, dry but very cold.

Giffords Circus came to Oxford on their 2019 tour and I went along to do some photography as I have done in previous years. It’s always nice to see familiar faces there and some new ones too. For these shots I used a Fuji 6×9 rangefinder camera which has a 90/3.5 lens that is not interchangeable. It’s a hulk of a camera but I really like the large viewfinder and the 3:2 aspect ratio of the frame compared to 6×7. The 90mm isn’t really a portrait lens so I tend to go a little wider than just head and shoulders.

Only a handful of pictures in this post because the rest of the shots on this roll contain spoilers so they will have to wait until after broadcast. This location was used after the scenes at the Oxford Union were finished. I like how Fuji Superia 200 handles colours even in bright sunlight. Too bad it’s not made anymore.

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour 7 | FILM 1 in Oxford, August, 2019. On this day the morning was spent filming inside the Oxford Union and I had used b&w film pushed to ISO 1600 due to the low light levels. After lunch I decided to load a roll of colour film because the colours inside were so rich (those shots will follow after this episode has been broadcast) and I knew the next location would be outdoors and the sun was too bright for ISO 1600.

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour 6, FILM 3 – CONFECTION. The location for the day was the Oxford Union – these pictures are from the William Morris room which is decorated in beautiful Willam Morris wallpaper. I have photographed inside this room many times because the OUABC team use it to warm up in for the Town vs Gown boxing competition. The Endeavour art department did a wonderful job of transforming this room and I’ll post more detailed pictures soon.

Some pictures from the first Sunday Scramble of this year, held at Bicester Heritage Centre. This roll ended up in the camera for 10 months with one frame remaining so it’s nice to see these shots, finally.
