This was in the fellows garden of New College, a location previously used when Endeavour chases a pickpocket out onto New College Lane in series 7. I was excited to see a Polaroid SX70 camera being used in this scene and it was fully functioning. The props guy was too young to have seen one of these cameras before so I explained how to operate it and loaded a fresh pack of film for him.

Some behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour 6 | FILM 4 in Oxford, October 2018. After filming some scenes in the main quad of Teddy Hall the action moved out to New College Lane. This was late in the afternoon with rapidly fading light as I recall. The light seemed to suit the mood of the scene.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 4 episode 2 ‘Canticle’ in New College, Oxford back in July 2016. I shot more film on this episode than any previous ones and some of my favourite shots have come from this episode too. A lot of hard work went into making the dance sequence and the hot weather and sizzling temperatures made it all the more harder. I found the song to be very catchy and couldn’t stop humming it the following day.

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of Endeavour 4 episode 2 ‘Canticle’ in Oxford, August 2016. These shots are from the very end of the day as the sun was going down and shadows began to get longer. I wasn’t sure how the film would handle the extremely contrasty light and half expected the shadows to fill in to jet black but I’m very pleased with these results. Not bad for film I bought at Poundland.

Behind the scenes photography from Endeavour – Series 4 Episode 2 at New College, Oxford. This was at the end of the day which you can tell by the long shadows and harsh sunlight in some of the shots. At the time I had no idea that the main storyline revolved around the band Wildwood so after watching the episode I’m glad I managed to get the group shot with the band’s manager and some of the crew. For most of my Endeavour behind the scenes photography I tend to use b&w film the most overall but on this day I only took colour film because although I had no idea how colourful the song and dance routine was going to be, I did get a little peek at part of the set the day before when a couple of scenes were being filmed in New College so I got to see the final touches of glitter being added to the rainbow and a few of the props such as the coloured watering cans and the step ladders. That was when I felt I had to use colour film.
Funnily enough, the spot where the scene with the screaming Wildwood fans was filmed in New College Lane is the same place where Tom Cruise was filming scenes from The Mummy reboot a few months earlier. You can see some of my pictures of that here.

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour series 4 episode: Canticle in New College, Oxford on a blazing hot day last July. Fortunately I was in the shade most of the time but I really felt for the dancers in their rain mac’s and welly boots. I’ve tried to show some different angles of the set that weren’t seen in the final edit because a huge amount of work had gone into it. The colours in these pictures are very different to the previous post because I used a different film, in this case Fuji Reala 100 which is one of my favourites for sunny weather photography but sadly it’s not made any more.

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of episode 2 of Endeavour series 4 (Canticle) in Oxford last July on a scorching hot day. This was part of the opening title sequence and was filmed in New College on an immaculate lawn. The attention to detail on the set was amazing but sadly not all of it could be seen on screen because I guess you can only fit so much into a title sequence. More to come.

Yesterday I taught a landscape photography workshop at New College with Anthony (the current Oxford University Photographic Society President) and after a classroom session we all went out into the New College grounds to do some photography. The sky was very clear which made for quite contrasty light with nice shadows. I decided to take my Polaroid 110B to do some large format photography on Kodak Plus-X Aerographic film to test out how it handled contrast. Overall I think the film handled the contrast very well, especially in this first image below. I only took six sheets of film with me and to save time I bracketed the first two shots and then used my last two on Anthony (we couldn’t decide on jacket on or off so we shot both).
