In this instalment of behind the scenes Endeavour photography you get a look at scenes that were filmed outside and inside the Oxford Union debating chamber. These shots are all from the same roll and the last frame was at the unit base on the last day of filming a couple of weeks later. I’ve photographed quite a lot of events at the Oxford Union so I’m familiar with the interior of the debating chamber and I really enjoyed seeing it completely transformed with lighting and haze lingering in the air. The scene outside where the flour bomb was thrown took a lot of planning and rehearsing. The shots below were with a stunt woman. One of my favourite b&w films to use is Ilford HP5 but to mix things up a bit I decided to use Kodak Tri-X for these shots.

Behind the scenes photography during filming of a night scene for Endeavour series 5 FILM 2 in Oxford. The scene of an arsonist setting fire to a house was filmed after the scene that follows it where you see the fire brigade and the distraught family in the morning. The art department did an amazing job with this house to not only make it look fire damaged but to also clean it up as if nothing had happened, all in the same day. This was a tricky scene to film with the flames going up timed with the driver lighting his cigarette while getting the flames to reflect in the driver’s door window without making it obvious that the flames were coming from a gas burner. This was all done on an Oxford street and not on a studio backlot so you can imagine how exciting it was for the local residents to come out and watch. The light level on the street was very low (street lighting in the 1960’s wasn’t what it is now) and that’s where working with a rangefinder camera can make it that much easier to focus than with an SLR.

As I’ve been looking through the rolls of film I shot for this Endeavour FILM I can see that it was a busy time for the crew with lots of different setups, mostly exterior and they came to Oxford at the end of May and early June 2017. This blog post contains a lot more pictures than usual because I had a hard time leaving shots out from this roll – there were too many that I liked so here they are.

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour series 5 FILM 2 in Oxford Covered Market in June 2017. The space inside Brown’s Café was quite limited so I decided to stay outside to stay out of the way. I quite liked the reflections in the windows and how you could see through them but also some of the people standing outside looking in, myself included. I’ve previously posted other shots from this roll that didn’t contain potential spoilers but now that this FILM has been broadcast here in the UK I’m posting some of the shots that I previously left out.

Quite a few pictures in this post from Endeavour 5 FILM 1 which was filmed in April 2017 but these scenes were filmed in September as pickups – not sure of the correct technical term, perhaps additional photography. The Director and DOP of these scenes also directed FILM 2. The first set of behind the scenes pictures shows just how much work can go into a straightforward scene that doesn’t necessarily last very long on screen – two actors walking towards a parked car while chatting. Reflector’s and flags are used to control and shape the light on the actor’s and can mean the difference between having some mood or none at all. It’s these details that I always find interesting on a film set and watching a Director of Photography work is always a learning experience for me. After the scene with the black Jag we moved to Exeter college dining hall for the auction scene.

These behind the scenes pictures from the filming of Endeavour 5 FILM 1 were from a day of pickup shots that were filmed in September 2017 while the rest of the FILM was shot in April. This was a busy day for the cast and crew and they managed to film quite a few different scenes. In the final edit you can’t tell but I wonder what the original edit was like. When the scenes with the cat burglar were being filmed I couldn’t help thinking of the old Milk Tray adverts and ‘all because the lady loves Milk Tray’.

Now that the first FILM from Endeavour series 5 has been broadcast here in the UK I will begin sharing behind the scenes pictures that I held back because they contained potential spoilers. Up until now I haven’t shared any pictures containing actor Lewis Peek because his character is new in series 5 but now that George Fancy has made his appearance you’ll see him popping up more often. Filming for these shots took place in April 2017 which is the same time of year the first FILM takes place.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 5 episode 3 in Oxford. Some of the filming took place on the roof of the building where Blackwell’s Art & Poster shop is on the corner of Turl Street and the Broad. As the episode hasn’t been broadcast yet at the time of this blog post I haven’t included any shots containing spoilers, those will follow some time in the future after the broadcast of this episode in the UK. The DOP on this episode was Jamie Cairney who worked on the first two series of The Detectorists which I just recently finished watching. It’s so beautifully shot and I’m excited to see how this Endeavour episode looks. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. As I was watching each episode I couldn’t help wonder how much fun it would have been to do some behind the scenes photography on that show.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 5 episode 5 in Brasenose college, Oxford. These pictures are from the last part of a long day where the rapidly descending sun was causing all sorts of issues with long shadows being cast where you don’t want them. We had nice light all day and I chose this particular film stock (Portra 400) because I knew it would not only cope well with the contrasty light but also the extra speed would come in handy in the shade as the light level dropped.

These portraits were made on the last day of filming of Endeavour series 5. Towards the end of a very busy day I managed to find a place in the corridor of the CID interior set where there was a nice pool of soft light that was perfect for some portraits so I took full advantage of it. In all of the years I have been photographing behind the scenes on Endeavour this was only the third occasion that I had seen Anton Lesser on set so I was especially pleased to have a chance to make his portrait just before a take. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to photograph more of the cast and crew on this occasion.

Behind the scenes during filming of pickup shots for Endeavour series 5, episode 1 in Exeter College, Oxford. There are lots of nice shots on this roll but I can’t share them just yet because of spoilers so for now these are the only ones I can share. This is the first time I had seen the Endeavour crew filming pickup shots for an episode that had finished filming months previously and goes to show how the production team never stop short until they’re completely happy with an episode.

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour series 5, episode 4. This was the final day of filming on this episode and the whole day was spent filming interiors of Cowley CID. It was fascinating to see how a space could be transformed in terms of mood and tone by subtle changes in the lighting and how it interacted with the actors. The main cast were in most of the scenes and I had a wonderful time spending the whole day documenting the cast and crew at work. Filming on series 5 wrapped yesterday (10-Nov-2017) as I put this blog post together so I won’t be seeing Team Endeavour until next year but between now and then there are many more photographic memories still to come.
