A new burger restaurant has just opened here in Oxford on George Street, it’s Byron Hamburgers but don’t be fooled by the name because the veggie burger on their menu is mighty tasty. I went for lunch there with two of my work colleagues and I have to say it was a very enjoyable experience, tasty food in a nice atmosphere. I really like both the exterior and interior of the building and the light inside is particularly nice with sunlight streaming in through frosted skylight panels in the ceiling at the back of the restaurant. Of course I happened to have a film camera with me (much to Rachel’s horror), so I couldn’t help making a few images while we waited for our food to arrive. Our waitress did a great job and we were all surprised to find out at the end that we were the first people she’d ever served! I’ll be going back there for sure and hopefully I’ll make some more nice images there when I do.
[Tech info:] Rolleiflex SL66 and 80mm lens, loaded with Fuji Acros 100 film. Processed in Kodak HC110 dilution b (1+31).
Stacked shelves.
Rachel's drink.
Water jugs. (Notice the distinctive shaped highlights from the Zeiss 80mm lens).
Some of the friendly staff. Our waitress is on the left.
Nice light on a chair next to our table.

Here’s a gallery of images that I made with medium format film at the recent Oxford Union Society 2012 summer ball. It was a fun event and the weather was perfect for a summers evening. Please email me if you’d like to order any prints. Prints look much nicer than looking at images on a computer screen and they’re all hand printed by me.
[Tech info:] Mamiya C330f and 80/f2.8 lens, loaded with Kodak Tri-X film, processed in Kodak HC110 dilution b (1:31). Processed and scanned by me. I think I used some expired Tri-X for these which accounts for the lower contrast in most of them.

These images are from the first roll of film through my Rolleiflex SL66 on the day that I received it. As I bought the camera sight unseen it was clear to me early on that the camera and I were going to get along just fine. One of the many nice things about using manual mechanical film cameras is not having to spend time navigating unfamiliar menus or having to trawl through an instruction manual just to change one simple setting. You just set the exposure, compose, focus and then *click*.

Right after the previous fruit and veg shot I turned around and grabbed this shot. There was a coach blocking this Mini from turning, that's why the driver looks so unhappy.

I managed to shoot a whole roll of film through my Rolleiflex SL66 camera during one of my lunch time walks a few weeks ago. Here are the first 5 frames. I’ve got so many images still to post from the college ball’s that I photographed recently and then on top of that I have a backlog of other images that I can’t wait to share from my lunch hour sessions and test shoots. Some people have asked if I sell prints of my photography and the answer is yes. Although I don’t make it obvious on this blog I assume that anyone wishing to purchase a print would contact me so please get in touch. All prints are hand done by me.

While cycling home from my dress rehearsal shoot at Lady Margaret Hall (see previous post) I passed this nice looking motorbike (MZ Trophy) as it was waiting in the line of traffic at the South Parks Road traffic lights. I asked the rider (Simon) if I could do some quick photography of him on his motorbike with the cool film camera I had in my bag and he agreed so we carried on down to the Bridge of Sighs next to Hertford College. The motorbike is from 1971 so it’s a similar age to the camera I used. The camera I had with me was a Rolleiflex SL66 that had arrived in the morning so these are some of the first shots through it. Naturally I was a little nervous about whether or not they would come out because with old cameras you just never know. Fortunately they turned out great and  I had both colour and black & white film backs loaded with me so I was able to do a bit of both. On the b&w roll I had a few blank frames at the start of the roll and I’m missing a few shots from the end so I’ll have to look at why that happened, possibly user error. Thank you Simon for stopping and for being so patient while I juggled with the film backs.
[Tech info:] Rolleiflex SL66 and 80mm/2.8 Zeiss lens, loaded with Kodak 160NC (rated at ISO100) and Fuji Acros 100. Processed with a Rollei digibase C41 kit and Kodak HC110 dilution H (8.5 mins).

I'm not sure where the light leak came from but I quite like it.
On the corner. (Movie trivia: the building in the background was used as the front of The Eagle pub in X-Men First Class).
Cool goggles (I'm in there).

There’s a Shakespeare festival here in Oxford at the moment and a few weeks ago I was contacted by the director of a one-off performance to see if I’d like to do some photography at one of their dress rehearsals. The actual performance is on 29th May 2012 at Blackwells Bookshop on Broad Street but these images were made at Lady Margaret Hall a few days ago. Only one of the cast is in elizabethan costume and I felt she’d make for better images than the others. For the colour shots I was experimenting with some film that expired in 2005 and I quite like the results. The black & white shots were made with fresh stock. If you do go and see it please leave a comment.

I was fortunate enough to be granted last minute (as in the day before) permission to photograph at the Oxford Union Summer Ball a couple of days ago and here’s a small preview of some of the images I made. This was my first summer ball where there was actually some summery weather and it made a huge difference to the look and feel of my images. For once I was able to rate the film at it’s normal speed and there was tons of gorgeous ambient light to make use of. I really like the architecture at the Oxford Union, both inside and out and I’d love to do more photography there. How amazing would it be to photograph the guest speakers there on black & white film?

The library was used as a cloakroom for the evening and very impressive it was too.

Another batch of film shots from the Keble College Ball 2012. Here you can see some from inside the Sheesha tent that was put on by Mr Flavour. It seemed like a popular spot with a constant queue leading out from the entrance. Not surprising really since it was cosy and warm in there. I did a lot of my portrait photography right outside underneath the big light ball. Those light balls were amazing and gave off a beautiful quality of light. The previous two sets of images from the Keble Ball have been very popular, thank you to everyone that has sent me messages. Feel free to add me on Facebook or like my photography page there if you want to keep updated on new posts here. Lots more images to come. If you were at the Lincoln Ball don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about you, more from there coming soon.

Here we have the first batch of shots I made on film at the Keble College Ball 2012. I’ve been feverishly processing and scanning into the wee small hours this morning to get these posted here as soon as I could because I love how they look. All of these were made using the available light. I decided not to use flash on any of my film shots during the evening.
[Tech info:] Mamiya C330f and 80mm lens with Kodak Tri-X film rated at ISO 1600. Processed in Kodak HC110 (1:31) dilution b for 16:30 at 20c.
Long live film.

Here’s the 4th batch of images from the Lincoln College Ball 2012. These were all shot on film and there are plenty more to come. One of the many things I love about using film is the fact that it takes time to create the images. Sometimes well over a week or more has passed between me processing the film and scanning it and in that time I’ve often forgotten what was on the film in the first place. Take some of these shots for example. It’s not quite 7 days since I shot these images but as I was sorting through them just now there are at least a few frames that I don’t remember making so coming across them is not only a surprise but also a treat. I was aiming to post new images every day this week but I’ve been feeling unwell the past couple of days, sorry about that. Lots more to come from the Lincoln Ball (both film and digital) and I’ll be photographing at the Keble Ball tomorrow night so there’s lots to look forward to from that too.
I’d love to photograph at the upcoming Oriel Ball so if anyone can hook me up with permission to photograph there it would be much appreciated!
Shots from the beginning of the evening before the rain started.

Here’s the first batch of images that I shot on film at the Lincoln College Ball 2012.There’s a huge difference in the look of these images compared to the digital images in the previous two posts. Please feel free to leave a comment to tell me which ones you prefer. I decided to try out a camera and flash combination that I hadn’t ever tried before and because I was using an old school camera I dusted off an old school Metz flash to pair it with. This particular flash is almost 25 years old and it cost me a week and a half’s wages from my first job after I left school.
[Tech info:] Mamiya C330f and 80mm lens loaded with Kodak Tri-X film rated at ISO 1600, processed in Rodinal (1:50 dilution).
The evening started off with some of the guests having a sit down meal.
