These shots are from a photo shoot I had with Alice last month on the last day of term, right before she was leaving Oxford for the summer. We had been trying to find the time to shoot but for one reason or another we never managed it but I’m so glad we got to arrange this at the last minute. The first time I photographed Alice was for a 1920’s themed promo shoot which I thought she was the perfect choice for and I’m hoping we can shoot some more when term starts again in October especially as Alice is a really good stylist with a wonderful collection of fabrics and clothes that will be fun to photograph . These shots were all made with a medium format camera, the 35mm shots will follow at a later time.

Now that I’ve got some C41 colour chemicals mixed up and we have some hot weather I’ve been slowly chipping away at the pile of colour film I’ve had sitting in my fridge for the past I don’t know how many months. Some rolls have labels on, others don’t so it’s exciting when I develop a couple of rolls and don’t know what’s on them until I hang them up to dry. These shots are from my photo shoot with Tamsin and Josh back in June when Josh made this amazing elephant costume for a party he was attending later that evening. I previously posted some black & white shots here.

Some film shots of Josh with the amazing elephant costume that he made for a party. Tamsin was called in to keep the elephant under control. Some Fujiroids from this shoot can be found here. These shots were from the very end of the photo shoot, I used some colour film earlier on but they’re still in my pile of colour rolls to develop so they will follow in the future. I’m trying out a new film developer (Kodak XTOL) and this was one of the first rolls of film that I put through it. So far I am really liking the results.

This set of shots is from a photo shoot I had with Georgina a few weeks ago in an amazing college room with that reminded me of a big country house. It’s always nice working with Georgina because she’s an amazing actress and doesn’t need very much direction. I hope we can get to shoot in this room again because I think it would be nice to shoot some colour film next time.

Here are the rest of the shots I made of some of the guests that were going to St Peter’s College ball. A few of these shots were not of the guests but they they were made during the same session so they were on the same roll of film which is why I decided to post them here. The light was fading quite fast at this point so I was struggling a little but these turned out great. According to Kodak you can rate their Tri-X film at ISO 400 or 800 and still develop it for the same amount of time. This proved to be correct even though I was using expired film.

Here’s the first set of images that I made last weekend of some of the guests on their way to St Peter’s College ball. It was a bit of a chilly evening and rather overcast so photography became tricky as the light level started to drop quite quickly. A lot of the students decided to wear coats (obviously to keep warm) but it’s not so great for photographs which is why I didn’t stop all that many people. I chose to process this roll in Rodinal for more of an old school look compared to HC110. It does increase the grain a little but I don’t mind that.
I’ll be photographing at Keble College ball on 4th May but as it’s the biggest night of the year for college balls (at least four on the same night) I’ll try to do some more group shots on the street of guests making their way to the ball so keep an eye out for me.

Here’s a set of images from my first shoot I had with Charlie. This was a very quick shoot using only natural daylight coming in through a large window in the late afternoon. I decided to take the opportunity to test out a lens that I’ve had sitting around for quite a while but have never used, a 110mm f2.8. One of my favourite lenses for my Mamiya 645 is the 80/f1.9 and I use it so often that you’d think it was welded on but the depth of field at f1.9 is so shallow that I tend to use that lens mostly at f2.8. When I decided to test out my 110/f2.8 lens I used it wide open at f2.8 for these shots. I really like how these shots turned out but I need to do further testing outside with more distance to the background so that I can see what the bokeh is like with this lens.

I was hoping to do some photography at the Exeter College ball last weekend but I didn’t send in my request until I was sure of what the weather was going to be like but by that time they had already signed up someone else to do the photography – the day before. That’s a shame because the weather was a perfect summers evening. I didn’t want it to be a total waste so I decided to go along to do some photography of the guests arriving. I really like how these have turned out and despite the falling light levels in Turl Street, film seems to have a way of soaking it all up. There’s a timeless quality to these that I really like especially the guys dressed in black & white.

The first shot below and the rest were made over a month apart because the camera (a Mamiya 645 Super) jammed after the first frame. It had arrived earlier that morning from a dealer that I purchased it from so fortunately I was able to return it for a refund. The other shots were made with a Mamiya 645 Pro TL on the same roll of film (thank goodness for removable roll film holders). The Pro TL was part of a whole kit which included a 150mm/f2.8 lens which I haven’t come across before so I was keen to try it out. So far I really like it and the shallow depth of field it gives even at f4. It’s a bit on the large size so it tends to attract a lot of attention in a paparazzi kind of way but I can live with that. These shots were all made in Radcliffe Square, one of my favourite places for street portraits.

Some rolls of colour film that I sent off to a photo lab for processing and scanning a week ago arrived back this morning and it was nice to see shots from lots of different photo shoots among them, mostly from the end of last year. I usually do all of my own processing and scanning but colour is tricky during the winter because the temperature of the chemicals needs to be kept within a very small tolerance (less than 0.5 of a degree) and my studio where I usually do my processing is an ice box during the winter. After building up a small batch of exposed colour film I decided to test out a new lab I had heard about rather than wait until the weather warms up in the spring and because I usually struggle a bit with colour scanning I went for the option to have the lab do it for me. I’ll drip feed the scans instead of cramming them all in together.
Here are a few shots from a lunch hour shoot I had with Georgina (I think at the beginning of December). We lucked out with the weather and nice wintery sunshine on that day. These were some of the last shots I made and the ones I was most excited to see, especially the two portrait shots where the sun is backlighting but also bouncing off a stone wall behind me to give a soft front light (one of my favourite kinds of light). These shots have had zero retouching done to them, one of the many joys of shooting with film.

Here are some shots from a recent lunch break photo shoot that I had with Jess to test out a new (to me) camera and lens combo that I picked up. Despite the sunny weather that we had on this day I decided to use some fast speed film that you’d only usually use in low light because I already had one roll of it to process and I like to process two rolls at the same time whenever possible. I really like how these turned out with the grain and I can see myself doing this a little more often.
