Oxford: Happy Valley

Written by Nasir Hamid on April 7th, 2022

Some pictures from an evening walk around Happy Valley in March 2021. I was experimenting with depth of field as the sun was dropping. I keep meaning to go back here with a larger format camera and feel the pond there has potential in different seasons.

Endeavour 8: FILM 2 – part 2

Written by Nasir Hamid on April 4th, 2022

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 8 episode 2 in Oxford, April 2021. The first two images show a character who sadly didn’t make it into the final edit which is a shame because it was an intriguing scene.

Endeavour 8: FILM 2 – part 1

Written by Nasir Hamid on April 1st, 2022

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour series 8 episode 2 in Wellington Square, Oxford. April 2021, lockdown restrictions had eased enough to allow filming to commence. I limited my photography to the exterior scenes. A nice little detail to look out for is the box of matches inside the taxi with the C. Dexter Matches brand.

Oxford: Foggy Boxing Day

Written by Nasir Hamid on January 4th, 2022

Here are some shots made during a foggy night in Oxford on Boxing Day last year, between 10pm and 12am. I chose to develop the film in 510 Pyro to see how well it held the highlights and I’m pleased to say it did exceptionally well as you can see from the pictures. The dynamic range between the street lights and the dark shadows in these night shots is huge but it didn’t seem to give 510 Pyro any problems. One of the last shots I calculated to be a 4 minute exposure with reciprocity but in hindsight I feel I miscalculated and overexposed the shot by at least 1.5 stops but the shot it still totally usable.

[Tech info:] Pentax 645N, 55/2.8, Ilford FP4, developed in 510 Pyro 1+100 for 11mins.

Dorset: Symmondsbury

Written by Nasir Hamid on November 6th, 2021

Some pictures here from a recent trip to Dorset. There are nice views of Colmers Hill from Symmondsbury and it’s also easily accessible from there if you want to walk to the top. The first and second pictures below were a comparison of how different focal length lenses affect the relative size of distant objects. The first shot was with a 28mm lens and notice how small and far away Colmers Hill looks compared to the second image which was made with a longer focal length (either 50mm or 135mm, I can’t remember which). I tried to keep the size of the gate in the frame the same for each.

Exmouth: a day at the beach

Written by Nasir Hamid on November 5th, 2021

Some pictures from a recent trip to Dorset. On one of the days we went to Exmouth and spent the day on the beach. A nice place to visit. Easy parking and not too extortionate. We lucked out with the weather especially it was getting towards the end of September. On this trip I decided to travel light and only took a small 35mm film kit (Pentax MX, 28mm, 40/2.8, 50/2 and 135mm lenses). I didn’t take all the lenses out at the same time, usually only 2 but sometimes 3 (28, 50, 135). I like the jump in focal length from 50mm to 135mm because the perspective is very different which makes carrying them both well worthwhile.

[Tech info:] Pentax MX, Ilford Pan F, orange filter, developed in Promicrol 1+14.

Oxford: quiet morning in Jericho

Written by Nasir Hamid on November 4th, 2021

Here are some pictures from a recent walk around Jericho with a mate of mine. I wanted to test out a camera and it’s been quite a while since I walked around Jericho so it was nice to combine the two. This roll of FP4 film is part of the blotchy batch I have and rather than throw it away, I use it for testing.

Endeavour 8: FILM 1 – part 3

Written by Nasir Hamid on October 5th, 2021

These behind the scenes pictures from Endeavour 8 FILM 1 show scenes which were not used in the final edit.  The shots of the Royal Mail postal workers on the picket line was most likely intended for the opening sequence. I’m not sure about the scene with Jack Swift and the Jaguar sports car. Merton Street, Oxford.

Endeavour 8: FILM 1 – part 2

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 8 | FILM 1 in Exeter college, Oxford. For a change I decided to use Kodak Tri-X because the weather was mostly cloudy and it allowed me to use a slightly deeper depth of field than usual when I’m using Eastman Double X. I like how the tones have come out with nice rich blacks.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 8 | FILM 2 in Wellington Square, Oxford. Quite a hot sunny day with lots of contrasty light, a perfect opportunity to try out some Fuji 400H to see how it would cope. This was recent fresh stock compared to the expired rolls I usually use.
