Behind the scenes photography from filming of Endeavour series FILM 2 in Oxford. This scene involved a house that had been cleverly dressed by the Art department to look like it had been burnt out by a fire bomb. The scene involving the arsonists was filmed at night on this same day. No actual damage was done to the house, it’s all smoke and mirrors. Afterwards there was a location move to Fred Thursday’s house where a scene took place in the front garden. This was June and with longer days it didn’t dark until quite late which made for a long and busy day.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 5 FILM 5 in Oxford. It was a sunny Sunday morning when special branch arrived at Brasenose College to take the college porter for a ride. The final scenes from this Endeavour FILM were filmed first thing in the morning and then the rest of the day was spent filming various scenes within the college grounds.

This set of pictures is a bit of a mixture and although they are all from the same roll of film, there are shots from two different episodes of Endeavour. While the cast and crew were in Oxford to film the final episode of series five they also filmed some pick up shots for the first episode. I guess you only really know how well scenes properly fit together when you’re in the editing suite and any gaps need to be filled which is probably where reshoots come in.

The Endeavour crew came to the Oxford Union to film some scenes from FILM 4 of the fifth series and these behind the scenes pictures are from a scene that involved a flour bomb being thrown. The pictures pick up from after the first take where the flour bomb missed the intended target so quite a bit of clean up was required before the second take – this is where the props guys sprung into action. The last handful of shots are from a different day when I visited the Cowley CID interior set and finished off the same roll of film. I really like the use of daylight balanced HMI lighting because it enabled me to use daylight film without any filters.

For a while now I’ve been meaning to use my Bronica SQA but either the weather or other things kept conspiring against me. Last week I finally managed to do it and here’s a set of pictures from the roll I shot during my lunch break photo walk. The shots of the drainpipe and the painted house number sign were made using a +1 close-up filter that I wanted to test and the last three shots were made with a red filter – the Radcliffe Camera shot had a polarising filter as well.

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of Endeavour series 5, FILM 6 in Oxford. This was a busy day of filming for the crew with the bulk of the time spent on the drive-by shooting outside the pet shop on Turl Street (the Oxfam bookshop on any other day). The first set up was outside Joan’s flat – you can see leaves on the ground as this was the end of October and Autumn was on the turn. More shots to come from this day of filming.

Glenn Close visited the Oxford Union for a Q&A event and here are some of the pictures I made to document what was a fascinating, funny and quite moving talk. The video from the event isn’t on the Oxford Union YouTube page yet but hopefully soon. I highly recommend it. My go to film for Oxford Union events is usually Ilford HP5 but on this occasion I decided to give Delta 400 a try and I do like the results. It feels like there is slightly less grain and a tad more shadow detail than HP5 but I need to do a more controlled comparison to really tell. In any case I’m very pleased with these results.

Here are some of my pictures from the Town vs Gown 2018 boxing event which was held at the Oxford Union. These shots are from the final bout when I decided to try out a film I don’t usually use very often – Ilford Delta 400. I pushed this roll to ISO 1600 because the light levels were low and I’m pleased with the results.

These behind the scenes pictures from the filming of Endeavour 5 FILM 1 were from a day of pickup shots that were filmed in September 2017 while the rest of the FILM was shot in April. This was a busy day for the cast and crew and they managed to film quite a few different scenes. In the final edit you can’t tell but I wonder what the original edit was like. When the scenes with the cat burglar were being filmed I couldn’t help thinking of the old Milk Tray adverts and ‘all because the lady loves Milk Tray’.

Now that the first FILM from Endeavour series 5 has been broadcast here in the UK I will begin sharing behind the scenes pictures that I held back because they contained potential spoilers. Up until now I haven’t shared any pictures containing actor Lewis Peek because his character is new in series 5 but now that George Fancy has made his appearance you’ll see him popping up more often. Filming for these shots took place in April 2017 which is the same time of year the first FILM takes place.

For the past four years I have photographed the Town vs Gown boxing event at the Oxford Union and this year I decided to experiment a little with my photography and try some ideas out that I’ve been thinking about recently – multiple exposure and using slow shutter speeds to record movement. Recently I bought a Nikon F80 camera body which has a multiple exposure mode on it which makes it very easy to layer exposures on a single frame so this was a perfect opportunity to use it. The film I used for these shots expired in 1991 which has reduced the contrast somewhat in very contrasty light conditions. I didn’t make any notes on which shutter speeds I used but I think I was between 1/30 and 1/90 for most of these. This roll of film was rated at ISO 400 but developed for the ISO 800 time to account for the age of the film. Overall I’m pleased with how these turned out.

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour series 5 episode 3 in Oxford. Some of the filming took place on the roof of the building where Blackwell’s Art & Poster shop is on the corner of Turl Street and the Broad. As the episode hasn’t been broadcast yet at the time of this blog post I haven’t included any shots containing spoilers, those will follow some time in the future after the broadcast of this episode in the UK. The DOP on this episode was Jamie Cairney who worked on the first two series of The Detectorists which I just recently finished watching. It’s so beautifully shot and I’m excited to see how this Endeavour episode looks. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. As I was watching each episode I couldn’t help wonder how much fun it would have been to do some behind the scenes photography on that show.
