These shots are from backstage at the Oxford Fashion Week Couture show which was held at the Ashmolean Museum here in Oxford towards the end of last year. I’ve been meaning to post these but didn’t get around it and as tomorrow evening there is another Oxford Fashion Week event being held there I thought it timely to put these up. The backstage area was in one of the massive halls of the Ashmolean but the lights had been turned off at the far end where all of the male models were waiting around to go line up for the catwalk which made it extremely difficult for me to manually focus my camera. It’s a miracle that any of these are in focus. I was holding my camera with one hand and a flash on a light stand with a big white umbrella with my other hand which provided the lighting in these shots and I’m very pleased with how they turned out. The outfits and styling was by the Clements & Church team who worked non-stop all evening.

These Fujiroids (aka Polaroid) are from a photo shoot I did a few weeks ago for Industry magazine. The magazine is out now so I can finally share these. Whenever I shoot digital images for a publication I usually take along some film to shoot for myself. We had the perfect location and perfect evening light on this day and I’m really pleased with how these turned out. In a few of the shots that were in the shade I added in a speedlight with an orange gel to mimic late afternoon sunlight. The top right shot was to demonstrate with and without. My thanks go to the models for being so patient while standing in the cold lake and to the rest of the team for organising everything.
Here’s a short video from the shoot.

The Balliol 750th Anniversary Commemoration Ball is coming up next month and in preparation for that dress hire company Wish Want Wear brought a selection of dresses for students to try on. I went along to do some film photography in Balliol’s gardens and here are the shots I made on Fuji instant pack film (just like Polaroid). I’ll be one of the photographers at the ball next month and I’m really looking forward to it. The very first Oxford college ball I ever photographed at was Balliol’s last year, you can see some of my images here.
[Tech info:] Mamiya RB67, 90/3.5 lens, Fuji FP100-C instant pack film.

Here are some shots from the second salon day at Keble College held by dress hire company Wish Want Wear. This was a lunch break shoot so I only had half an hour shooting time. Katherine did an amazing job at changing outfits in record time. I’ll be photographing at the Keble Ball on 4th May and I’m really looking forward to it.

During my photo shoot at the Wish Want Wear salon day at Keble College, Oxford, not only did I shoot with digital and film, I also shot some Fuji instant pack film (aka Fujiroids). Here they are below. Unfortunately I only had 5 sheets left in the pack and I didn’t take any more with me which was a real shame because these were a huge hit. Keble is such a great location and I am very much looking forward to photographing at the Keble College summer ball that is coming up next month.
[Tech info:] Mamiya RB67, 90mm lens with an Arca Swiss sliding Polaroid back that allows me to shoot two shots on each sheet.

These shots are from the salon day at Keble College that was held by the designer dress company Wish Want Wear. If I had one wish it would be to have had more time to shoot because it really was a case of so many dresses and so little time. I previously posted some of the black & white shots I did there and now here are some colour ones for your viewing pleasure. I usually process and scan all of my own film but processing colour film during the freezing cold winter weather is a bit tricky because of the warm temperature the chemicals need to be kept at and my studio where I do my processing is like a fridge during the winter. That’s why I sent this roll of film away to a lab (Ag Photolab) and I’m very pleased with their scans. Zero retouching was done to these shots, none! Some more shots still to come.
If you’re looking for a ball gown to hire for one of the many upcoming Oxford University summer balls, give Wish Want Wear a look. Hopefully I can work with them again in the future because this was a really fun shoot. The Keble summer ball is on 4th May. See you there.

Last weekend I did a photo shoot with the amazing team at Popham Hairdressing on North Parade here in Oxford. They had picked out four of the models that they worked with during Oxford Fashion Week last year and it was nice to see some familiar faces. All of the photography was done in their salon which thankfully has a really high ceiling which was perfect for setting up a boom arm for one of the lights. I shot a mixture of film and digital. Below are the Fujiroids that I shot with the sliding Polaroid back on my RB67. I also shot some colour and black & white roll film which will follow at a later time.

The theme of St Peter’s College Ball this year is The Roaring Twenties but there is also going to be a 1920’s themed charity fashion showcase at the Oxford Hub in Turl Street on 1st March and it was for this event that I was asked to do some promo photography for. I really like images from the 1920’s, I feel it was a really photogenic era so I was excited about this photo shoot. I’ve never been inside St Peter’s College so I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of usable locations but fortunately one of the shoot organisers (Rosie) had done a scout and found a stair well that ended up being absolutely perfect. We lucked out with the weather and light on the day of the shoot so the early Saturday morning start was well worth it. I love how these Fujiroids have turned out, especially the shots of Alice against the red wall. Alice couldn’t have been more perfect for this shoot and I’m hoping I’ll be able to shoot with her again some time. My thanks to Rosie for inviting me to shoot and to everyone else involved for working so hard. I shot some black & white film which will follow once I’ve processed and scanned it.
More info about The Green Light Fashion Showcase can be found here.
Tickets for the ball can be ordered from their website.

Last week there was a salon day at Keble College where a designer dress hire company (Wish Want Wear) brought in lots of ball gowns for girls to try on to see whether they wanted to hire them for one of the many college balls that are being held this summer. I was invited along to do some photography (I photographed Keble’s ball last year) and here are some of the results. I shot quite a lot so there will be other shots to follow. For this shoot I decided to experiment quite a lot more than I would normally as a way of learning. For example I wouldn’t usually photograph someone backlit by a window. My thanks go to Mel for being so patient while I juggled with different cameras and to Katherine for inviting me. I’m really looking forward to this year’s Keble ball.

Yesterday I photographed a Valentine’s Day themed fashion photo story for The Oxford Tab website. Despite some last minute location scouting everything came together really well. My thanks go to the dynamic duo of Helen and Megan for putting together another great shoot and to their friends for braving the chilly weather. I shot digital for the fast (next day) turnaround but I did manage to shoot one Fujiroid.
You can see the full photo story here: http://oxford.tab.co.uk/2013/02/13/my-sordid-valentine/

A few weeks ago I received an email asking me if I’d like to do a photo shoot for the second issue of Industry magazine which is produced by the Oxford Fashion Society. The first issue was digital only but the second issue is to be printed and anyone that knows me knows that I’m a sucker for real ink of paper so of course I said yes! We did the shoot last Saturday on a cold but very sunny morning which was a real blessing after a week of bad weather. I can’t show the official shots until the magazine is out but as they were shot on digital I used film for my own personal shots. The ones below were made in the Oxford Union library which is a location that I am very fond of and somewhere I’ve been wanting to do a photo shoot ever since I photographed the summer ball there last year. As my main priority was to get the shots for the magazine I didn’t have much time to shoot as much film as I would have liked which is a real shame because the models looked amazing. Hopefully I’ll get to work with these models again.
My thanks go to Anna for organising everything and for pulling together some amazing outfits and to the models for braving the cold and for working so hard. More images to follow.

After the success of my first fashion photo shoot for The Tab Oxford, I was asked to do another one. We did the photo shoot around Worcester college but as it was pitch black outside by the time we were ready to start I lit the shots with portable strobes. I’m a lighting fanatic so I jump at the chance to bust out some lights to experiment with on a shoot. Everything came together nicely for this one thanks to a really creative team and models that were brave enough to handle the cold. Thank you to all involved. Below are a couple of shots that didn’t make the final edit.
You can see the final selection of shots on The Tab website.
